Our Favorite Aspen Hotel is Making History in New York
One of Aspen’s favorite hotels is making major news in New York. The news that Aspen Hospitality is launching Nell Hotels — a new luxury brand rooted in the three-decade legacy of The Little Nell — and debuting it inside Rockefeller Center falls firmly into the second category. The Nell New York, set to open in fall 2027 at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, will be the first and only hotel within Rockefeller Center and New York City’s only Relais & Châteaux property. It is, by any measure, one of the most significant hotel openings the city has seen in years.

The announcement marks two simultaneous milestones for Aspen Hospitality, a division of Aspen One. The Nell New York represents the brand’s first expansion beyond Colorado, carrying the philosophy and warmth of The Little Nell into Manhattan with a $350 million investment. At the same time, The Little Nell in Aspen — the brand’s founding property and the only Five-Star, Five-Diamond ski-in/ski-out hotel in the destination — will temporarily close in April 2027 for a comprehensive renovation, reopening transformed in time for the 2027-2028 ski season. The two moves together tell the same story: a brand evolving from a position of strength, not necessity.
The Nell New York will occupy 134 rooms above Rockefeller Center, converting former office space into an intimate hotel with a seventh-floor arrival experience designed to lift guests above the pace of Midtown entirely. The Art Deco grandeur of the surrounding landmark is the design’s primary reference — every detail, the hotel says, intended to feel timeless, intentional, and connected to the architectural ambition that Rockefeller Center represented when it was built nearly a century ago. Art will play a central role throughout the property, continuing a tradition established at The Little Nell of presenting both emerging and internationally recognized artists.
The programming is as considered as the design. Amenities include an all-day dining venue, a lobby bar, a wine lounge that brings The Little Nell’s globally renowned wine program to New York, and a spa designed around what the brand describes as a total recalibration of energy and ease. Above the hotel on the 17th floor, a signature fine dining restaurant will open with expansive views across Rockefeller Center and the Manhattan skyline. In joining Relais & Châteaux — the globally recognized collection of independently operated luxury hotels and restaurants defined by exceptional hospitality and cultural authenticity — The Nell New York becomes the only property in New York City to hold that designation.

What distinguishes the Nell Hotels model from a conventional luxury hotel expansion is the philosophy behind it. CEO Jeff Toscano describes the intention as presence over scale — being exactly where the guests are, rather than everywhere at once. In New York, that translates to a hospitality model that the brand calls “inherently insider without requiring membership”: access to studios, galleries, private dining rooms, cultural institutions, and the people shaping New York culture, delivered through a hotel team that knows how to open those doors. The same access ethos that has defined The Little Nell’s relationship with Aspen — where the mountain, its culture, and its community are as much a part of the offering as the rooms — arrives in Manhattan with the city itself as its terrain.
In Aspen, meanwhile, The Little Nell’s renovation will not interrupt the experiences most closely associated with the property. The weddings program continues, with the iconic Wedding Deck remaining available throughout the closure. The Residences at The Little Nell — private, fully appointed homes steps from the mountain with rooftop pool, ski concierge, and 24-hour service — remain open for bookings, ensuring the most devoted members of The Little Nell community retain their home in Aspen during the transformation. The hotel’s spa residency with celebrity facialist Georgia Louise, whose clients include Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, has been extended through next winter.
Rockefeller Center has operated for nearly a century as what its builders called a city within a city — a place to dine, shop, skate, work, and gather without ever leaving the complex. With The Nell New York, it becomes a place to stay. For a landmark that has spent ninety years defining what Midtown Manhattan looks like, that feels less like an addition than a completion.
