Victor and Farah Makras are turning into quite the political power couple. In the past couple of months, the real estate magnate and socialite have hosted several fundraisers and put their full support behind new Mayor, London Breed. Just last week, the Makras’ opened their gorgeous Marina Boulevard home for an event to raise awareness about San Francisco’s sea walls.

Currently, the 100-year old walls are in disrepair, and the city hopes to pass a proposition that will provide $425 million in bonds to fix the wall along the Embarcadero. “I’m campaigning for the seawall and I only want to focus on the sea wall. I use New Orleans as an example—what happened with the levy and how people were wondering, ‘why haven’t we done anything to think about the future to protect the city of New Orleans?’ We need to make sure that we’re investing in some of the most critical infrastructures that can prevent what happened there,” Mayor Breed said. “We all remember when hurricane Katrina hit, we all remember the devastation and the hopelessness we felt as we watched it on television. In San Francisco, we won’t have to deal with that if we take care of the seawall.” Breed urged votes to help Proposition A pass, so that the project, which will take 30 years and provide 30,000 jobs, can be realized.

Former mayors, Willie Brown and Art Agnos, spoke after Breed echoing her sentiments and calling for action regarding the sea walls. Prop A needs 2/3 vote to pass and is not only backed by the mayor’s office but the board of supervisors as well. At the event, Mayor Breed joked about the podium in the Makras’ living room—wondering how they got it and commenting that it was nicer than the one she had at City Hall. Guests mingled with the politicos while sipping Veuve Clicquot from Farah’s champagne glass collection. A16 provided the food which included delectable caviar bites and seasonal crostini.
