Ice and Slice Hits Fulham

News | February 17, 2015

Brand new to Fulham’s vibrant drinking and dining scene this spring is Ice and Slice, offering premium quality artisanal Italian gelato, traditional pizza and focaccia by-the-slice (al taglio) as well as handmade cakes and pastries.

Opening imminently, Ice and Slice is a new project by the talented team behind Shot Espresso, the café and bar on the same pedestrianised lane, just a stone’s throw from Fulham Broadway. Gelato is made daily in view of customers, combining premium ingredients – think Yeo Valley organic milk and double cream, Granada Organic chocolate from Rococo, hazelnuts from Piedmont and Sicilian pistachios roasted to order, and whole fruit – with serious technique. Classic flavours are complimented by some quirky originals including Salted CaramelTiramisu, Aperol Spritz, Weissbier, Violet Rose and Crunchy Corn Flake.

Ice and Slice’s traditional Italian gelato is made and pasteurized daily in very small batches (four liters) with no added colour, artificial flavours or preservatives and then stored in covered wells (“nel pozzo”) for immediate consumption. By contrast, ice cream is usually produced in bulk, with modern additives, and then stored, frozen, for long periods of time. It is lower in sugar, fat (50 to 60% less, on average) and calories (150-200 vs 166-250 per half cup) than ice cream. Yet somehow, gelato is denser, tastes richer and creamier and delivers more intense flavours.

Classic gelato is served at a temperature that is five or six degrees warmer, on average, than ice cream (which is usually served at or below freezing). As a result, it tastes warmer, which is one of the reasons that Italians eat gelato right through the winter: any excuse! Ice and Slice also serves a range of low dairy (5%) and dairy-free sorbets, with a vegan gelato range in the pipeline for summer.

Authentic Roman-style pizzas at Ice and Slice are made from homemade sourdough, leavened for 48 hours to make it lighter and easier to digest. Sourdough contains no artificial yeast, no milk, no oils and no sweeteners or preservatives, making it one of the most natural breads. For the diet conscious, there are cheese-free options such as the Napoli topped with Tomato, Salsa, Capers, Anchovies and Black Olives or a range of focaccias.

Pizzas are available whole, by the slice or to order with slices starting at £3.50. Signatures include: Tartufo: Truffles, Mushrooms, Spinach and Grana Padano Shavings and Mortadella, a novel combination of Pistachios, Mortadella and Tomato Salsa. Guests can create their own pizzas with a seasonal assortment of toppings and then watch it being made.

The shop is fully licensed and offers two house wines and two house beers on tap and also houses a mini-patisserie kitchen that makes the pastries and cakes served in Shot Espresso. Sweet delicacies include ProfiterolesMacaroonsOrange Polenta and a whole range of classic cakes and panettone.

Ice and Slice pizza, gelato and cakes are also available for delivery to homes or businesses within a range of almost 3km from the store, via Deliveroo.co.uk or Dinein.co.uk
