Craig Robins Announces Shiny New Contemporary Art Museum in Design District
Perfectly timed with the beginning of Miami Art Week, Craig Robins announced yesterday that his (ok DACRA’s) Design District would soon be home to the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA). The announcement was made together with City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado and Co-Chairs of ICA Miami’s Board of Trustees Irma Braman and Ray Ellen Yarkin,
The museum itself will be a 37,000 square foot white and glass box of a structure designed by renown Spanish firm Aranguen & Gallegos. The museum will be built on a lot on 41st Street that was generously donated by Design District Associates. Construction will being in 2015, so in the meantime, The Moore Building will be the museum’s temporary headquarters. And they will get started right away with an amazing installation by artist Andra Ursuta called “As I lay Dying,”
Irma Braman had this to say, “We are thrilled to be able to realize the design and construction of the ICA Miami’s new home without the need for any public funding. We are especially thankful to Craig Robins and the Miami Design District Associates for enabling us to remain permanently in the Desing District, which sits at the crossroads of some of the most dynamic communities in Miami-Dade. We have selected Aranguren & Gallegos, a firm noted for designs that respond to, enliven and enrich dense urban environments.”
