Summer In Paris: Molitor Opens In Paris With Restored, Iconic Pool

The Piscine Molitor, an Art Deco gem built in 1924 in Paris’ posh 16th arrondissement, was the most famous of bathing spots in Paris in the 20th century. The bikini was first photographed there, the original Tarzan worked as a lifeguard— it was the social center in hot summer months as well as an ice rink in the cold ones. It was that pool at “Piscine” from Life of Pi was named after.

The iconic pool finally closed in 1989 and succumbed to graffiti artists and even held its share of raves. But after a fight by activists to save the historic landmark, and finally a €80 million (about $109 million) renovation and restoration by from French hotel group Accor, the place is now a chic hotel and pool.

A night at the new 124-room Molitor hotel is a steal starting at about $300 and up. What’s a little steeper by comparison is a day of swimming, or an annual membership, which will run $200 and $4,000 respectively. The hotel boasts both an indoor and outdoor pool, it is not just a chic, modern place to stay that’s heavy on the history, it’s also the only place to stay if you want a Parisian hotel with an amazing pool.
