The Met Ball: What Will Co-host Oprah Winfrey Wear?

News | May 3, 2010

This evening’s Costume Institute Gala is mere hours away. So, while we all wait in eager anticipation for a glimpse of this year’s chosen couture, we have the inside scoop on co-host Oprah Winfrey’s magical gown.

Oprah, who is co hosting this year’s event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with Patrick Robinson of the Gap and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, chose one of the most influential American designers, Oscar de la Renta, to create her dress. “It is very romantic. Lots of ruffles, lots of cleavage—a real dress for a real woman,” says de la Renta of his latest creation. Since choosing Oscar de la Renta as the designer details of the gown have been a well-kept secret…until today.

The final product is a rich navy silk-organza gown with navy and black dégradé caviar beading and ruffle embroidered skirt. It took a team of four couturiers over 250 hours to complete—no small task for the reigning Queen of talk, of whom de la Renta has the highest praise: “She is the embodiment of the all-American woman, but she is not at all nostalgic. She is a woman of the twenty-first century.”

This evening the stunning gown will be unveiled when Oprah joins her other co-hosts in welcoming the who’s who of fashion, art, and entertainment to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And check back with us tomorrow for a look at the event’s best-dressed attendees. (Ed note: the runway image shown is from the Oscar de la Renta FW 2010 show, and not the gown Oprah Winfrey will be wearing.)
