Aspen/Snowmass Receives 24 Inches of Snow in 24 Hours

Aspen powderSnow fell at a rate of an inch per hour starting Thursday morning, and skiers and snowboarders woke up to more than two feet of snow on area mountains today. All four mountains–Aspen, Snowmass, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands–were blanketed in snow, and riders rushed to the resorts to reap in the benefits of what some are calling the “biggest storm in decades.” With 24 inches in 24 hours, and another 8 expected by Saturday morning, storm totals could be close to three feet.

Nearly 15 feet of snow has fallen on the local mountains this season, with January snowfall totals nearing 125 percent of average. There is considerable avalanche danger in the area out of bounds, and skiers are encouraged to stay in the resort.
