Macallan Single Malt Scotch Sets World Auction Record with $628,000 Sale
A six liter bottle of single malt whisky sold for a record-breaking $628,00 during a recent auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The Macallan ‘M’ in a crystal decanter by Lalique exceeded its initial appraisal of $258,000 – $516,000, and currently holds the title as the most expensive whisky ever sold at auction, beating out Sotheby’s 2010 previous sale of $460,000.
Only four Imperiale “M” Decanters were ever made by the Scottish distillery, each requiring the work of 17 craftsmen and more than 50 hours to complete. Proceeds from the sale will go to a number of Hong Kong charities, including Hong Kong Single Parents Association, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association and Society for Community Organisation Limited.
“We are absolutely delighted at the generosity of the successful bidder of the “M” 6L decanter Constantine in securing such a wonderful contribution to a number of Hong Kong charities and at the same time setting a new world record for The Macallan,” David Cox of The Macallan said in a press release. “It is testimony to the craft, quality and passion underpinning the creation of this great decanter. It is a very proud moment for us.”
