Earth Day: Christie’s Green Auction to Benefit Our Planet, With Some Designer Duds
Earth Day is next week, and while we have heard of many amazing initiatives by the fashion world to support our great planet, none comes close to the Christie’s Green Auction taking place April 22.
The auction, which has been two years in the making, marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Christie’s has secured wondferful donors and sponsors across the cultural, philanthropic, business, fashion, arts and entertainment industries. And in a move that proves the unconditional support of Christie’s toward our struggling environment, the famed auction house will wave all fees and commissions. Furthermore, all proceeds from the sale of the items listed in the catalog will benefit four environmental not-for-profit organizations: Central Park Conservancy, Conservation International, Oceana, and Natural Resources Defense Council, all groups with a top four-star rating by Charity Navigator, the leading not-for-profit rating agency.
Girard-Perregaux has donated two fine timepieces, each valued at over $200,000. Stella McCartney is auctioning off a special fitting with the designer for two bespoke suits made of sustainable fabric—one for him, one for her—valued at $30,000; deeemed more valuable for the dapper male because McCartney has yet to design a men’s line. There are outstanding artworks by Damien Hirst and Kenny Scharf, and a photograph by David LaChapelle. IWC Shaffhausen is a key sponsor, as well as Gucci: Forever Now, a campaign to celebrate the traditions of Guccio Gucci as the fashion house approaches its 90th anniversary in 2011.
