The Hautest Unique Cocktails in LA
In case you haven’t noticed, the phrase, “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” need not apply in this city. From dawn ‘til dusk, LA has more celebrated cocktail bars and restaurants than it knows what to do with. Thankfully, Haute Living is always on the lookout for a good drink and knows not all cocktails are created equally. From sweet concoctions to strong libations, we’ve handpicked our favorite boozy sips around the city just in time for the weekend.
What: The Super Hero
Where: Lexington Social House, 1718 Vine St, www.lexingtonsocialhouse.com
The Super Hero cocktail was created with your inner child in mind, as this vodka-lime-cranberry sip is garnished with a tried-and-true childhood favorite: Pop Rocks candy. Think of it as a Cosmopolitan with a twist. Mixologists called it the “super hero” for the Pop Rocks that fly everywhere when you combine the two together.
What: The Aquavit
Where: INK., 8360 Melrose Ave., www.mvink.com
For the Aquavit, head bartender Gabriella Mlynarczyk says she wanted to do a white sangria-style drink with a Nordic/Germanic influence, but wanted to avoid the usual fruity, ice-filled drink. Instead, she infused the flavors of chamomille into the liquor and used Riesling with aquavit, a spirit made from potatoes, to complement the chamomille and honey. Bee pollen is then sprinkled on top as a tongue-in-cheek ode to curing seasonal allergies homeopathically.
What: Liquid Nitrogen Caipirinha
Where: The Bazaar by Jose Andres, 465 S. La Cienega Blvd., www.thebazaar.com/jose-andres
Bartenders at The Bazaar transform this national drink of Brazil that combines sugar, fresh lime juice and rum into a science-savvy libation, as they gently whisk a steady stream of liquid nitrogen into the drink. Unlike similar frozen versions of the caipirinha, The Bazaar creates a soft, ice cream-like texture.
What: Magic Mojito
Where: The Bazaar by Jose Andres, 465 S. La Cienega Blvd., www.thebazaar.com/jose-andres
Additional tricks up the bartenders’ sleeves at The Bazaar include its Magic Mojito, which doesn’t drift from the restaurant’s gastronomical menu. Touted as a “dramatic display of cocktail theatre,” the magic starts when the bartender takes a cocktail glass filled with a cotton candy puff and then pours the mojito from a shaker into the glass to make the cotton candy “disappear.”
What: Mr. C Bellini
Where: The Restaurant at Mr. C, 1224 Beverwil Dr., www.mrchotels.com/beverly-hills/beverly-hills-restaurant.php
Hollywood may as well reserve a star for this famous drink, as The Restaurant at Mr. C’s signature Bellini is the original Bellini drink invented by the Cipriani family (who happens to own this restaurant). This refreshing peach-puree and Prosecco based drink is available during brunch and the restaurant’s new cocktail hour on Monday through Friday from 5pm to 7pm in the lobby lounge bar.
