‘The Sound of Music’ Costumes Auctioned for $1.3 Million
The Sound of Music, a fan favorite and cinematic icon, is reeling in the big bucks and rekindling its popularity once more. At a Hollywood auction yesterday, the original costumes sold for a whopping $1.3 million. Put up by Profiles in History, the precious pieces included Maria’s memorable ‘Do Re Mi’ dress, the Von Trapp children’s florid green and white garb, school uniforms and attire from the pivotal escape scene in Switzerland.
Played by Julie Andrews, the beloved nun Maria donned her classic Austrian brown ensemble in the 1965 film. Created out of unlikely materials, the thick and heavy homespun dress and tan blouse sport 20th Century-Fox labels on the interior collar and waistband.
The Sound of Music won five Oscars and replaced Gone with the Wind as the highest-grossing film ever.
