Haute 100 NY Update: Woody Allen Considering Stand-up Comedy Tour
Brace yourself, New Yorkers: Woody Allen may be coming to a comedy club near you! In a new interview with The New York Times, the Academy-Award winning writer, director and actor said he may return to the stage for a stand-up comedy tour.
Allen said he was inspired to return to his comedy roots after seeing the 85-year-old Mort Sahl recently perform at the Carlyle Hotel. “Watching him, I had the same feeling now, in 2013, as I had when I saw him in 1950-something,” he recalled. “Of, ‘Hey, I’d like to get back onstage and do standup again.’ He inspired me then to be a standup comic, and all these years later, I thought of it again because of him. He makes that phenomenon so enticing.”
Despite Allen’s busy schedule (his new flick “Blue Jasmine” hits theaters on July 26), the 77-year-old industry veteran can’t seem to shake the idea of doing stand-up again. “Since I saw him [Sahl], I’ve just been toying with the idea,” he revealed.”I would love to see if I could. Just getting together an hour of stuff to talk about would be a lot of work.”
