News | July 18, 2013

President Shimon Peres of Israel has invited New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire to play for the country’s national basketball team. The six-time NBA All-Star met with President Peres earlier today to discuss the player’s charity efforts, reports the Associated Press.

Stoudemire has visited Israel several times and has formed various ties to Israeli basketball. Last month, he joined a group looking to buy Hapoel Jerusalem, a team in Israel’s top league. Stoudemire is currently in Israel coaching the Canadian basketball team at the Maccabiah Games, a competition for young Jewish athletes.
