SF 49er Joe Staley Dishes on Charity, the Super Bowl and ‘The Joe Show’

News | June 3, 2013

Joe StaleySF 49er Offensive Tackle Joe Staley talked it up with Haute Living as he prepared for his stint as ambassador of SF’s first Electric Run, an exhilarating 5K race that benefits Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft lip and palate charity.

The SF Electric Run took place for the first time at Candlestick Park, the same field on which Staley plays during the season.

SF’s first race was epic, raising  $10,000 for Smile Train. One million watts of light and sound transformed the Candlestick course into an electric wonderland.  Participants joined the show by lighting up with glow sticks, LEDs and anything else their imagination could conjure up.

The route for the run took participants all around the outside of the stadium, through the concourses and across the 49ers field. More than 8,000 participants were greeted at the finish line by a live musical performance from a local DJ and a family-friendly party.

Staley, the comical host of the “Joe Show”, an outrageous off-the-cuff show that tackles non-football related topics like end-zone dances and trash talking, kept it light and fun as he prepared for the event, proudly displaying flashes neon on his crazy outfit.  He started by asking “Do you like my outfit?”  (check it out below). He took a few minutes to talk to Haute Living before his big kick-off of the run.

Haute Living: Why is it important fo you to support this run?

Joe Staley 1Joe Staley: They approached me about getting involved and doing the race start, and when I learned about it some more, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get involved with a really cool event.  It’s a very unique 5k.  This is my first time working with Smile Train, which I think is a great cause. They do a lot of great work around the world.  it’s a good cause and people really enjoy it.

HL:  When and where did you start training?

JS: A lot of guys were training everywhere.  I stayed here in SF and trained.  Kaepernick went to Atlanta, but a lot of guys just went everywhere. Some guys trained back at home wherever they’re from. People usually started training about week or two after the season was done.  But officially we started around April 20th in Santa Clara.

HL:  What can we expect to see next during the “Joe Show”?

JS:  I’m gonna get the rookies out there when they get in. I always like messin’ with them. But just expect more stupid questions.  I don’t like to plan it ever.  I actually never plan them; I  just like to do them off the cuff.  If I’m in a good mood, I just ask the questions right there.  What you see is what you get.

HL:  And the million-dollar question: What will you do differently this year to win the Super Bowl?

JS:  I think we just have to do what we did last year. We’re in a perfect position, and when you get there, it’s just down to one game. We have to come with a more complete team; you know, we had holes.  We addressed that in the off season and added some really great players.  This season is gonna be tough but everyone is really focused. We need to just get back to that game at the end of the year, then it’s just one game for everything.
