Gay Ski Week Returns to Aspen for 36th Year
More than 3,000 gays are in Aspen this week for the 36th Gay Ski Week, an annual celebration full of on-slope schussing and into-the-night partying. Every year, old friends and total newcomers gather in Aspen and Snowmass for a week of events that includes comedy shows, friendship dinners, dance parties and of course skiing on the mountain du jour.
Tonight’s screening of “Gayby” at the Wheeler Opera House tells the story of two best friends–a gay comic book writer and hot yoga teacher–who fulfill their college vow to have a baby together. The movie starts at 8:15 p.m. and director Jonathan Lisecki will follow the movie with a Q&A.
On Friday, the week’s highlight event returns to Fanny Hill on Aspen Mountain. The downhill costume parade and contest is a hysterical fashion show on skis, where drag queens prevail and costumes are a must. The parade ends in Gondola Plaza, where participants can also purchase tables for up-close-and-personal viewing for the noon event.
Gay Ski Week runs through Jan. 20, culminating in a Gay vs. Straight hockey game and pool party on Saturday night.
