Stewart Rahr Teams Up with Pal Leonardo DiCaprio To Buy ‘Casablanca’ Piano

News | December 17, 2012

Businessman Stewart Rahr and actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined forces to buy the upright 58-key piano featured in the 1942 movie Casablanca. As Haute Living previously reported, the piano was being sold at auction via Sotheby’s in New York and had a pre-sale estimate of $800,000 – $1.2 million.

According to Sotheby’s, the piano is finished in viridian green with ivory trompe l’oeil craquelure interior panels and is inscribed with maker’s mark: Richardson’s Inc., Los Angeles. It is described as “one of the most important props from the most romantic movie ever made and one of the most famous musical instrument in movie history.”

Rahr and DiCaprio bought the piano for $600,000 and reportedly plan on donating it to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
