World Snow Polo Championships Return to Aspen

News | December 14, 2012

Look for ponies and snow, but don’t expect a sleigh. The World Snow Polo Championships return to Aspen this weekend, and it’s the only stop the sport makes in the United States. Played on a snow-packed arena, teams of three riders mount polo ponies and play with a red ball so that players can find it in the snow.

Back for its 13th year, snow polo was introduced in St. Mortiz, Switzerland in 1985. This year, matches will take place at the Marolt Open Space on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At night, teams and players host cocktail parties, making it a lavish affair–with heated viewing tents during the day–all weekend long. After the action on Saturday, head to the Caribou Club hosted by the Tempus Jets. On Sunday, the Roaring Fork Club presents a closing party at the Sky Hotel.
