The Times named Thompson as its new C.E.O. before the BBC was embroiled in an unprecedented controversy involving the late Jimmy Savile, a popular host at the broadcaster who has been accused by hundreds of underage children of sexual misconduct spanning decades during which the BBC allegedly turned a blind eye to his widely rumored improprieties.
