Made up of Los Angeles residents in their 20s to 40s, the Young Literati are part of the Library Foundation’s mission to raise awareness and support the Los Angeles Public Library. On Saturday, the group hosted their Fifth Annual Toast to benefit the library with celebrities like Jack Black and Moby in attendance to show their support.
On Saturday evening, the Young Literati welcomed guests and celebrities for the Fifth Annual Toast to benefit the Los Angeles Public Library. Jack Black, Moby, Miranda July and Shepard Fairey did readings and performances of written work that influenced their development as artists.
According to LAist, Jack Black chose to read from You Can’t Win and also did an a Capella performance of a lullaby with his wife Tanya Haden joining him on stage. Moby read from The Futurist Manifesto, Miranda July read from the dictionary and Shepard Fairey read the first six pages of The Catcher in the Rye.
The event, which took place at the Richard J. Riordan Central Library also had music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres by MAS MALO.
Shepard Fairey and his wife Amanda serve as honorary chairs of the Young Literati.
Proceeds from the event will go towards technological upgrades and public Internet access at the Los Angeles Public Library. Members of the Young Literati enjoy access to numerous members-only cultural events featuring authors, actors, artists and academics.
