Joan Crawford’s Best Actress Oscar Sold for $430K
Recently, Joan Crawford’s best actress Oscar the starlet won for her role in “Mildred Pierce” has been sold for $426,732 by celebrity auctioneers Nate D. Sanders Auctions in Los Angeles.
In 1945, Crawford won the Oscar beating out Ingrid Bergman, for her role as a struggling middle-class housewife during the Great Depression. Crawford who died in 1977, ironically, pretended to be ill, in order to miss the Academy Awards ceremony. She felt as if she wouldn’t win, but despite her assumptions, the US actress won, with her director Michael Curtiz accepting the award on her behalf.
According to a visit at the late star’s hotel room, Crawford stated: “Whether the Academy voters were giving the Oscar to me, sentimentally, for Mildred or for 200 years of effort, the hell with it—I deserved it.”
Here’s what Sanders had to say about auctioning off the Oscar: “This Oscar carries with it a fascinating story as well, and represents Joan Crawford’s gutsy comeback in the industry that labeled her ‘box office poison’ several years earlier.”
“It’s really one of the most spectacular Oscars in existence,” Sanders adds.
In the past, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has criticized the sales of Oscar statuettes, but has not currently commented about the recent auction.
Last year, British Actress Kate Winslet won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her performance in the recent TV mini-series based on the originally written 1941 novel Mildred Pierce by James M. Cain.
