Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art Forgoes Fall Gala

The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) has announced that it will not be hosting its popular fall gala this year and said this year’s gala will be held instead in the spring.

According to reports, MOCA is experience difficult times and recently saw the forced resignation of longtime chief curator Paul Schimmel, the subsequent loss of seven other employees and a budget that dipped to the lowest level since the 1990s. In addition, all four artists on the board resigned as trustees.

However, museum spokeswoman, Lyn Winter, said, “The MOCA galas historically have taken place at different times during the fiscal year, and this year’s gala will be in the spring. We will announce the date soon.”

Pushing back the fall gala to the spring gives MOCA additional time to plan for the event, which undoubtedly requires extensive planning. A long list of pop stars like Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Beck, Caetano Veloso and Devendra Banhart have previously been enlisted for the event and the three most recent galas were all curated by artists (Francesco Vezzoli, Doug Aitken and Marina Abramovic).
