Andy Warhol’s Rare Queen Elizabeth II Portrait to be Auctioned at Bonhams

A rare portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by famed artist Andy Warhol will go to auction at Bonhams Print Sale in London on July 11. Based on a portrayal of Queen Elizabeth sculpted in 1977 to mark her Silver Jubilee, the portrait will be at auction during London’s celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee.

As part of the Reigning Queen Series, the signed and numbered print “Queen Elizabeth II” portrait is estimated to fetch between £40,000 – 60,000 when it heads to auction on July 11 in London. It is likely that the portrait will sell upwards of its estimates, considering another one of Warhol’s portraits (of Elizabeth Taylor) sold for more than $662,000 more than its estimated price tag last year.

The Reigning Queens series also includes portraits of the Queens of Denmark, the Netherlands and Swaziland. According to Bonhams, the Queen Elizabeth portrait was the last print-portrait Andy Warhol did before his death in 1987.
