First Luxury Underground Hotel to be Built in Shanghai’s Tianmashan

News | April 17, 2012

Shanghai Shimao Property Group is developing the first luxury underground hotel – or “ground scraper” – at Shanghai’s Tianmashan, a 328-foot (100-meter) abandoned quarry.

The luxury hotel, which is being designed by U.K. based engineering firm Atkins, will be built upon the side of the quarry. Three floors will rest above the ground on the crater and 16 other floors will be built underground. It will house 380 rooms and will offer many other services including an underwater restaurant, an athletic facility that can also be used for water sports and a 32-feet deep aquarium, as well as a the opportunity to use the quarry’s cliffs above water for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and rock climbing.

Expected to open in 2014 or 2015, this spectacular “ground scraper” is part of a larger project by Shanghai Shimao Property Group, which plans to develop Shimao Shanghai Wonderland, a massive theme park.
