The Holy Grail of Comics

News | February 23, 2010

A rare copy of the first comic book featuring Superman sold Monday morning to a private collector for the astounding price of $1 million.

A private seller sold the 1938 edition of Action comics No. 1 to another private buyer, both of whom chose to remain anonymous (good idea considering how many people who would do next to anything to get their hands on this book).

The original cost of the comic book was 10 cents in 1938. That’s right, from 10 cents to $1 million.  Too bad your mother threw out all your old comic books when you were a teenager, huh?

The rare Superman comic was sold on the auction web site known as ComicConnect.com.  It was reported that the sight listed the original Superman comic at 10:30 a.m., and minutes later, a deal to buy the comic was under way.

Serious comic fans may very well consider this comic the most important book in the world.  Many consider it the Holy Grail of comics because this particular book is said to mark the start of the age of superheroes.

There are a very limited number of this particular action comic left in the world, and previous sales of the first Superman saga averaged anywhere between $250,000 to $500,000. So why was this particular one sold for so much you ask? That’s simple. Its condition was immaculate.
