TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice 2012 Award for number one luxury hotel in the world went to the Shangri-La Hotel located in Tokyo.

After compiling more than 60 million comments from visitors and taking into account variables such as quality of service, price and standard of guest rooms, TripAdvisor awarded the Shangri-La in Tokyo with the top prize for luxury hotel in the world.

Located near Tokyo Station in the center of the city, the Shangri-La Tokyo is one of the newest of the luxury hotels in Tokyo featuring high-end facilities and amenities. The Imperial Palace and the Nihonbashi area are both within walking distance to the hotel. It is located on the top 11 floors of the Marunouchi Trust Tower Main building and has 200 rooms with the Shangri-La’s trademark Asian design concepts throughout the hotel. There are six exclusive suites and 31 Horizon Club rooms all located on the top floors overlooking sweeping views of the Imperial Palace or Tokyo Bay.

The TripAdvisor awards, which began 10 years ago, are based on reviews and opinions by travelers. Categories were expanded this year to include top-25 lists and an international competition for the best properties to visit. This year, TripAdvisor recognized 3,943 hotels for various accolades including best service, best relaxation and spa and trendiest hotel.
