Glenmorangie Just Released Its Oldest Whisky Ever — Only 149 Bottles Exist

Fifty years is a long time to wait for a drink. For Dr. Bill Lumsden MBE, Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie, it has been the realization of a dream he has carried since joining the Highland distillery as Distillery Manager in 1995. On September 24, 2026, that dream is made available to 149 people in the world who will hold a numbered bottle of Glenmorangie 50 Years Old, the oldest single malt whisky ever released from one of Scotland’s most celebrated distilleries.Photo Credit: Glenmorangie

The story of this whisky begins before Dr. Bill arrived. In the mid-1970s, Glenmorangie’s own floor maltings were producing some of their last batches of barley before being decommissioned in 1977. That barley, malted on site and distilled in Glenmorangie’s uniquely tall copper stills, was then laid down in bourbon hogshead casks and first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. The liquid rested and evolved, accumulating time in the way that only the finest whisky does, becoming something the distillery had never attempted to bottle before.

When Dr. Bill joined in 1995, the whisky was already more than 20 years old. Sampling as much of the distillery’s mature stock as possible in those early years, he identified a small number of parcels with exceptional potential. “I set both aside,” he has said of the bourbon and sherry cask parcels, “with the thought that, in a very old whisky, bourbon barrels can bring a little too much nuttiness and woodiness. Sherry casks would balance that out, adding a touch of sweetness.”

In 1999, he acted. A parcel of whisky, comprising mostly bourbon-cask-aged liquid with a smaller portion from sherry butts, was married in a single refill hogshead barrel. The choice of that specific cask was deliberate and precise. Refill casks carry a much subtler wood influence than first-fill barrels, protecting the whisky’s delicacy over the extraordinary length of time that would follow. Tightly coopered, the cask was set aside for another 25 years.

The particular challenge of creating a 50-year-old Glenmorangie is not simply time. It is the distillery’s own house style. Glenmorangie’s uniquely tall stills produce an exceptionally delicate and perfumed spirit that picks up flavor from the wood very quickly, which means extended maturation carries a genuine risk of the wood overwhelming the spirit entirely. Maintaining Glenmorangie’s signature elegance across five decades required every decision, cask type, transfer timing, and storage condition, to be made in service of that single goal.

The result is a whisky that Dr. Bill describes as harmonious rather than heavy. Dark mahogany in color, Glenmorangie 50 Years Old opens with aromas that surprise for a whisky of its age: baked oranges, sultanas, nutmeg, cardamon, and a distinctive herbal top note reminiscent of coriander or parsley, with hints of toffee and leather beneath. On the palate, the mouthfeel is gently peppery and slightly drying, giving way to bold flavors of toffee, stewed Assam tea leaves, birch tar, cinnamon, and grape must, with a touch of clove and oak tannin. The finish is long and lingering, revealing hints of aniseed, treacle toffee, and eucalyptus. A few drops of water release a candy sweetness and further toffee notes. The floor-malted barley from the 1970s contributes a very subtle smokiness that the sherry cask influence, with its toffee, sultana, and brown sugar notes, balances and rounds out.

“It has to be one of my proudest creations,” Dr. Bill has said. “The combination of Glenmorangie from classic bourbon barrels, with a touch of sweet yet spicy sherry cask-matured liquid presents a stunning whisky of depth and complexity, harmonized with Glenmorangie’s signature elegance. It’s particularly special that this whisky was created from some of the last batches of barley to be malted on site at the distillery in the mid-1970s, which has added rare hints of smoke to its flavour profile.”
