Long before reaching the NBA, Washington kept a handwritten list of seven or eight goals beside his bed, all of them centered on basketball, all of them audacious enough to sound like fantasy coming from a kid still waiting for the world to catch up to what he believed he could become. The list included becoming an All-Star, making it to the NBA, and, most specifically, one day playing for the Dallas Mavericks, his hometown team. He methodically checked off each one as it became reality.

Washington’s path to that homecoming wasn’t a straight line. Drafted 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 2019, he earned NBA All-Rookie honors his first season and, by 2023, a three-year, $48 million contract extension that should have been the story of his tenure there. Instead, the story became where he wasn’t: a playoff-caliber roster. On February 8, 2024, Washington and two second-round picks were traded to Dallas in exchange for Seth Curry, Grant Williams, and a protected 2027 first-round pick, sending him home to the team he’d written down as a goal years earlier. He helped push the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals in his very first postseason with the team, and has since signed a four-year, $88.8 million extension to remain in Dallas through the 2029-30 season.
