Not all shirts are created equally, and With Nothing Underneath is proof. Pip Durrell, a former Tatler editor and Vogue stylist, saw the need for a well-priced, high-quality shirt and decided to create her own. Thus, With Nothing Underneath was born.
Inspired by men’s tailoring, British heritage, and timeless silhouettes, Durrell launched her London-based brand, which has since grown to include an array of wardrobe essentials—from shirts to tailored pants to cozy crewneck sweaters. At the core of With Nothing Underneath is simplicity—the ease of dressing. We spoke to Durell to learn about how she grew her brand into what it is today, what’s next for WNU, as well as everything in between.
Haute Living: Where did the name come from?
Pip Durrell: Jotting ideas down for the brand in 2017, the year we launched, I wrote “to be worn effortlessly, without thought or anything underneath”. And that’s where I got our name: With Nothing Underneath. There’s real chicness to women who dress well by wearing timeless pieces seemingly thrown on, as if they have just pulled on their boyfriend’s shirt from the night before with denim jeans layered under a vintage coat – it’s nonchalantly sexy, it’s laid back but put together and it’s exactly how I enjoy dressing.

HL: How do you like to style your shirts?
PD: My go-to daily uniform is a classic white shirt tucked into a really good pair of denim jeans, cinched in with a belt at the waist. It’s the perfect base that works every time. With the sleeves rolled up and my favourite gold necklaces on, this outfit takes me from nursery drop off straight into design meetings; and when my meetings go external, I pull over our Hutton wool blazer and pair of heeled boots. (But it depends on the time of year right, because a brushed flannel shirt cosily layered under one of wool jumpers was a must with my recent trip to New York!)
HL: What is your favorite piece and why?
PD: Surely you can’t ask me that! But what I will say is the Classic Denim Indigo is probably my most worn shirt at the moment. Layered under knits or over a white tee – it’s been a real stalwart in my wardrobe this year.
