How SKYX Is Making Miami Homes Smarter and Safer

Something new is coming to Miami over the next couple of years. SKYX Platforms just announced a partnership with SG Holdings to bring smart home technology and modern electrical safety to a $3 billion mixed-use smart city development in Miami’s Little River district. SKYX will deliver 500,000 smart units to the project in Little River. The move is part of SKYX’s ongoing effort to update a century-old industry with 21st-century tech and a lasting commitment to safety.
Smart Home Tech for the 21st Century
SKYX believes that smart cities are the future for all cities. To that end, the company has developed a safer, faster, and more eco-friendly way to install lighting fixtures. It was no easy task, and took over a decade to finish creating the SkyPlug, a weight-bearing plug-and-play ceiling receptacle. The device is exactly what it sounds like: a lighting fixture that you plug into the ceiling, without the need for wiring or for screwing and unscrewing light bulbs. SKYX is offering the new tech in at least six colors, with designs intended for both residential and commercial buildings.
Much of the decade of development was spent conducting extensive testing and collecting data on the new tech in order to convince the electrical industry that this would indeed prove a sustainable and safe alternative to traditional wiring methods. Stringent safety requirements had to be satisfied, as well.
The result? The SkyPlug meets the National Electrical Code (NEC), and SKYX has taken this reliable new technology to the market. The company has over 100 patents globally, either issued or pending.
How This Smart Lighting System Got Started
SKYX’s founder, inventor Rani Kohen, in his earlier business career, focused on real estate development and lighting showrooms that he owned. He grew exasperated with the chaos of installing light fixtures and ceiling fans; hours were lost to tangled wires, dangerous electrical hazards, and the constant risk of injury. One late night, driven by a burst of inspiration, he sketched the first design of the SkyPlug on a napkin, a plug-and-play ceiling outlet to make installations as simple as plugging in a lamp. That rough sketch ignited his mission to make homes safer and smarter.
In addition to ingenuity and concern for safety, SKYX has also been able to successfully bring its SkyPlug to homes thanks to partnerships with ANSI, NEMA, NFPA, and leaders in the electrical industry.

Bringing the SmartPlug to Little River
The real estate project in Miami’s Little River district represents the first extensive rollout of the new tech. SKYX’s role is to bring to this new neighborhood more than half a million of its plug-and-play smart home devices.
Beyond the SkyPlug ceiling outlets and smart lighting, SKYX is also supplying these smart buildings with AI-powered smart home platforms and emergency products.
Looking ahead, Kohen and his team hope to make SkyPlug a standard installation for new home construction projects and retrofits, and not just in the United States and Canada. Besides increasing home safety, this could reduce the carbon footprint of lighting installations. SKYX has also set its sights on integrating its AI-enabled SkyPlatform with major IoT ecosystems in order to help give homeowners safer, fully connected smart homes.
