McLaren Automotive has unveiled one of its most striking artistic collaborations to date with Project Chromology by MSO, a bold reimagination of the McLaren 750S created in partnership with acclaimed British abstract artist Nat Bowen. Debuting during Miami Art Week, the project represents a new intersection of color psychology, emotional expression, and high-performance automotive craftsmanship—pushing the boundaries of what bespoke supercar design can be.

Bowen, best known for her vivid resin artworks and her exploration of chromology, the psychology of color, brought her creative philosophy directly into McLaren’s design world. Working closely with McLaren Special Operations (MSO)—the brand’s bespoke customization division—she helped introduce an entirely new paint innovation: the MSO Chromatic Layered Finish, a multi-layered, translucent technique inspired by the depth, texture, and emotional resonance of her signature style. Through this finish, MSO translates Bowen’s layered resin approach into the sculpted surfaces of the 750S, adding complexity, tactility, and unexpected dimensionality to the supercar’s exterior.

The Chromatic Layered Finish is built through meticulously applied translucent coats that allow light to move across the car in shifting tones and gradients. In an MSO first, the paint introduces a subtle raised texture that can be both seen and felt, creating a tactile quality reminiscent of Bowen’s physical artworks. This groundbreaking surface treatment bridges art and engineering, turning the supercar into an emotional object—one that changes personality with light, angle, and environment.

Each commissioned 750S in Project Chromology will be created for a select group of MSO clients, with every vehicle expressed through a unique chromatic palette. These palettes are crafted to evoke specific emotional profiles, reflecting Bowen’s exploration of how color shapes mood, identity, and personal expression. Whether serene and introspective or bold and energizing, the finishes speak to the owner’s individuality and MSO’s ability to turn intangible ideas into material artistry.

To deepen this personal connection, MSO introduces another exclusive element: 24-carat, hallmarked gold-plated badging created specifically for Project Chromology. Placed on the front, sides, and rear of each 750S, the badges incorporate backing colors matched precisely to each car’s core palette, ensuring the color story remains cohesive from every angle. Each commission also comes with an original Nat Bowen artwork, offering owners a tangible, gallery-grade interpretation of their supercar’s emotional identity beyond the vehicle itself.

Unveiled globally during Miami Art Week—a fitting platform for a project at the crossroads of contemporary art and advanced automotive design—Project Chromology demonstrates how far MSO can push the limits of form, texture, and personalization. As Jonathan Simms, Director of McLaren Special Operations, notes, the project “brings a new level of depth, tactility and material complexity to our paintwork,” underscoring MSO’s mission to expand the possibilities of bespoke craftsmanship. Bowen adds that the collaboration transforms color psychology into “a living experience,” fusing art and performance in a way that feels deeply personal.

In a world where personalization has become the new frontier of luxury, Project Chromology stands as a testament to McLaren’s visionary approach. By harmonizing emotional design, technical innovation, and the artistry of one of Britain’s most compelling contemporary talents, McLaren has created an automotive expression that is not just seen, but felt—an immersive experience where color becomes identity and motion becomes emotion.
