A Love Letter to Greece

Arrival: When Greece Calls

Our journey to Greece from Miami wasn’t one we had planned for long — it came together unexpectedly, almost as if Greece had called and we simply answered. The route was a trek: Miami to New York, New York to Athens, then a three-hour drive through the countryside to our final destination. By the time we arrived, I had been awake nearly twenty-four hours — yet the moment I stepped outside the Athens airport and took in that crisp, cool air, I felt suddenly awake, alive, and full of anticipation.

Costa Navarino: Where Land Meets Legacy

When we finally reached Costa Navarino, I understood why everyone speaks about it with such reverence. We were greeted with the kind of warmth that can’t be trained — genuine, graceful hospitality that makes you feel instantly at home. Check-in was effortless, our room exquisite — floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the golf course and the Ionian Sea. The light was soft, golden, endless. Even the smallest details, like Romanos by the Naxos Apothecary amenities, carried a sense of thoughtful simplicity you only find in places built with soul.

But what truly sets Costa Navarino apart is its heart. At the core of its philosophy lies a deep commitment to environmental and social responsibility — not as a marketing line, but as a way of life. Roughly eight percent of its development budget was dedicated to sustainability infrastructure, ensuring every decision honors the land of Messinia. Nearly seven thousand olive trees were transplanted rather than cut during construction — the largest such effort in Europe — and more than 1.2 million native shrubs and trees have been planted to preserve the region’s biodiversity.

“Sustainability here isn’t a buzzword — it’s a birthright.”

Only ten percent of Costa Navarino’s land is developed, allowing the rest to remain wild, green, and deeply rooted in the rhythm of the earth. Buildings follow the principles of bioclimatic architecture — low-impact structures that blend into the horizon, designed to harness light and breeze. At the Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino nearby, villas and suites are sculpted into the land itself, their rooftops covered in native greenery, echoing the terrain rather than interrupting it. This isn’t just sustainable tourism — it’s stewardship.

History, Harmony, and the Sea

Just twenty minutes away, the seaside town of Pylos unfolds like a storybook. Overlooking the bay of Navarino, it’s where Greece reclaimed its independence in 1827. Walking along the harbor, past the Ottoman-era castle and centuries-old olive trees, you can feel time stretching both before and behind you. There’s something humbling about standing in a place where history feels so alive — where you are both a millisecond and a memory all at once.

That first night, we dined at Da Luigi, one of the destination’s Italian-inspired restaurants. Our host poured the white house wine called 1827 — named for the year of Greek independence — and it became the quiet centerpiece of our table. A Chardonnay, but lighter and more poetic than most, like a sip of sunlight.

The Spirit of Philoxenia

The next morning, we explored Pylos and visited Niokastro Castle, its stone walls still watching over the bay as they have for centuries. Lunch was at Parelia beachfront restaurant, at the W Costa Navarino, where we ate grilled octopus, Greek salad, and seafood pasta while looking out over the Mediterranean — that endless, mesmerizing blue.

Back at The Romanos Resort,  Anazoe Spa awaited. My therapist was kind and intuitive — she spoke about how water, heat, and sea salt have been used for healing since the time of Hippocrates. The hydrotherapy pools shimmered beneath the skylight, each one slightly different in temperature, designed to soothe, restore, and revive. The air carried the faint scent of eucalyptus and sea minerals — and for a moment, it felt as if time had stopped.

Tastes of the Ionian

That evening, we had dinner at Flame restaurant, where the sommelier guided me through an exceptional selection of Greek reds. Though their international wine list is impressive, I was drawn to the local varietals — elegant, soulful, surprisingly complex. Dinner was refined yet unpretentious, and as we lingered over dessert, we met a couple from Amsterdam who felt instantly familiar, like characters written into the story at just the right moment.

Later, when we returned to our room, we discovered we’d been upgraded to a suite with a private plunge pool. We slipped into the water beneath a sky of stars, the faint scent of jasmine in the air. It was pure magic — that rare, suspended kind of joy that makes you forget everything except where you are.

Of Hands and Hearts

The next morning began with a private tennis lesson at the Mouratoglou Tennis Center. The courts overlook the sea, and even the most intense drills felt effortless under that blue horizon. Later, we lounged by the adults-only pool before heading to Pylos House for a traditional cooking class with two local women, Lula and Anna. Their laughter filled the room as they taught us to make homemade pasta, tzatziki, Greek salad, and zucchini pie. It wasn’t just a meal — it was an exchange of spirit, joy, and history passed down through hands and heart.

This connection between guest and local is woven into Costa Navarino’s Messinian Authenticity program, which invites visitors to experience local traditions firsthand — olive harvesting and olive oil tasting, village cooking, art tours, dancing, even wine pressing. It’s tourism that feels human, generous, and alive.

Liquid Gold and Living Traditions

On our final day, we joined a bike tour to Voidokilia Beach, often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with Moraitis Outdoors. The ride wound through farmlands and lagoons before reaching the famous omega-shaped bay. We hiked to the top, looking down as the sea glimmered like glass. Later, we swam in the cool water before heading to Barbouni, the destination’s open-air beach restaurant. There, with sand beneath our feet and sea spray in the air, we feasted on orzo with local blue crab, crisp salads, and chilled rosé.

That afternoon, we attended an olive oil masterclass — tasting Navarino’s award-winning oils, liquid gold in every sense — and learning how the region’s groves are cultivated with reverence for the land. Through the Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, more than 1,500 farmers and 800 F&B professionals in the region have been trained, revitalizing Messinia’s agricultural economy and culinary heritage. Their Navarino Icons brand brings these traditions to the world — olive oil, honey, and herbs crafted with integrity, each bottle a story of place.

“At Costa Navarino, sustainability isn’t performed — it’s practiced, lived, and shared.”

A Destination with a Soul

Costa Navarino’s impact extends far beyond its borders. With more than 11,000 direct and indirect jobs created and an 11% contribution to Messinia’s GDP, it has revived an entire region while keeping its heart intact. From inclusive hospitality practices and animal welfare programs to partnerships with local suppliers — nearly half of its F&B procurement budget goes to Messinian producers — the destination embodies what responsible luxury can look like when done right.

At W Costa Navarino, inclusivity isn’t an afterthought; it’s designed into the experience. Gender-neutral amenities, prayer kits, beach wheelchairs, noise-canceling headphones — thoughtful gestures that remind every guest they belong. It’s no surprise W became the first IGLTA-accredited hotel in Greece for inclusive practices.

Costa Navarino’s story is more than a resort — it’s a movement toward balance. Between progress and preservation. Between opulence and authenticity. Between how we travel and why we travel.

A Last Toast to Greece

As the sun began to set, we ended our day with cocktails at Anax Lounge, where I tried their signature olive-oil gin martini — silky, aromatic, distinctly Greek. For our final dinner, we dined at Paráfrasi by CTC, the destination’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Every dish was an ode to modern Greece, but it was the dessert — Ekmek Kadaifi, a pistachio mousse with wild cherry compote and crispy phyllo — that I’ll never forget. One bite, and I understood what “divine” really means.

Looking back, what stands out most about The Romanos Resort isn’t just its beauty or refinement — it’s how it invites you to reconnect with yourself. Here, people come to rest, to move, to learn, to play. Some come to golf, others to cook, to dance, to rediscover their rhythm in the company of the sea. Whether it’s a quiet morning swim, a spontaneous conversation over wine, or the echo of a centuries-old story whispered by the wind, Costa Navarino doesn’t just host you — it heals you.

Epilogue: Greece, Remembered

As I boarded my flight home, I carried more than memories. I carried that stillness between sea and sky, the laughter shared over homemade pasta, the reminder that joy often lives in the simplest of moments.

Greece has a way of awakening you — softly, completely, forever.
