The Haute Guide to Choosing the Perfect Tuxedo

Dress codes can be confusing. It can be pretty hard to know the difference between formal, cocktail attire, white-tie, and black-tie. Formal and cocktail attire are more casual, while white-tie is fancier (often requiring a traditional coattail jacket). Today, we are talking about a black-tie dress code, which calls for a tuxedo, in some form or another.
We went over to Suit Supply and walked through the steps of designing a custom tuxedo, all so that we can impart our wisdom onto you. From the jacket to the pants to the shoes to cufflinks, every detail boils down to a science. It’s not as simple as you might think.

According to Suit Supply’s Global Style Director, Marc Harmeling, “The most important step when choosing a tux is deciding how traditional you’re willing to go. I stick to my personal rule of style, fit, and craftsmanship. The fit and fabric determine how I like to style a look. Ask yourself: Do you want to keep it formal and traditional, or do you want to add some punch?” He continues, “I strongly believe your look should match your personal style and vibe. If it doesn’t feel authentic, it’s not style.”
The one thing that Harmeling makes clear? The perfect tuxedo will feel like an extension of you. Here’s how to pick yours.
Step 1: The Vibe
Nail down the vibe and formal level. Assuming it’s black tie, decide if you want to go with a classic look or something less traditional.
Step 2: Fabric
Often, fabric correlates with formality. Pure Italian wool is more classic, silk blend or textured fabrics give more flair. Also, the weight of the fabric and the texture influence both the drape and the mood of the tux.
Step 3: Fit
Choose between slim, regular, or wide-leg. Then, single-breasted or double-breasted, as this will impact styling options.
Step 4: Lapel Style
You might not know this, but there are actually three typical lapel styles that correlate with your personal preference and fabric choice. Peak is sharp and formal; shawl is smooth and classic; and notch is rare, but making a comeback.
Step 5: Color
While black obviously is timeless, you can always try for something bolder yet still fall under the eveningwear guise, like a navy, brown, or an off-white.
Step 6: The Details
The next step is picking out your shirt—black stud front, clean placket, a silk open-neck—and then opting for accessories like a bow tie, waistcoat, or even a handkerchief.
Step 7: Personalize It
Now you can make the tuxedo feel like you, by bringing in silk shirts, tank tops, playful accessories, or alternative footwear—whatever matches your style.
