Villa d’Este: A Dream Escape on the Shores of Lake Como

Tucked away in the charming village of Cernobbio, on the edge of Italy’s legendary Lake Como, Villa d’Este is more than a grand hotel—it’s a world of elegance, tranquility, and unforgettable moments. My recent stay at this historic estate was nothing short of magical, and from the moment I arrived, I knew I was somewhere truly special.
As I stepped into the grand lobby, I was immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of refined beauty. Everywhere I looked, there were fresh, breathtakingly arranged flowers—bouquets that filled the air with the most delicate, luxurious fragrance. The scent was soft but unmistakable, blending with the timeless décor and hushed elegance of the space.

The staff greeted me with warm smiles and seamless service, setting the tone for a stay defined by quiet excellence and heartfelt hospitality.

My room, located in the historic Cardinal’s Building, was pure charm. Spacious and classically decorated, it featured a private balcony overlooking Villa d’Este’s magnificent gardens. Each morning, I would step outside with a cup of coffee and take in the serenity—the soft rustle of leaves, the distant sparkle of the lake, and the perfectly manicured lawns and sculptures below.

The peace and quiet were unmatched, making it feel like a private retreat within a royal estate.
Dining with a View
One of the most memorable parts of my stay was the food. Every meal at Villa d’Este felt like an event—yet never pretentious, always welcoming.

Breakfast was a daily highlight: fresh-baked pastries, perfectly prepared eggs, fruit, cheeses, and rich Italian coffee—all enjoyed on a lakeside terrace with views of the gardens and the shimmering water. It was peaceful, nourishing, and grounding—one of those moments you want to press pause on.

For lunch and dinner, I explored the villa’s celebrated restaurants:
- La Veranda offered formal Italian dining in a romantic setting, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open in the warmer months. The views of Lake Como, the gardens, and the famous Mosaic were simply breathtaking.
- The Grill Restaurant, near the Queen’s Pavilion, provided a more relaxed yet elegant setting with a cozy ambiance and Mediterranean flavors. The Grill Terrace was the perfect spot for an aperitivo while watching the sun dip behind the mountains.
- The Platano, with its mix of Mediterranean and Japanese influences, served up a sophisticated, globally inspired menu on a beautiful private terrace—ideal for a quiet evening with a view.
Chic Serenity by the Lake
The floating pool was unlike anything I’ve experienced—suspended over the lake, surrounded by views that look like they belong on a postcard. It had a distinctly chic, Riviera-style vibe, with sun loungers, umbrellas, and service that made you feel effortlessly pampered.

And then there’s the property itself—more like a private park than a hotel. Sprawling gardens, winding paths, hidden fountains, ancient statues, and shaded corners for peaceful reading or quiet reflection. You could spend hours simply wandering, soaking in the beauty and stillness.

What truly sets Villa d’Este apart is the people. The service was impeccable—not just professional, but warm and genuinely kind. Everywhere I went, I was greeted with a smile. Nothing felt forced or overly formal—it was natural, gracious hospitality at its finest.

Villa d’Este is a rare place that captures the heart with its beauty and soul. It’s where time slows down, senses awaken, and every detail—from the scent of fresh flowers in the lobby to the calm of breakfast by the lake—makes you feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
I left feeling rested, inspired, and already longing to return to this Italian jewel.
