Heart Walk Success: Miami-Dade Community Raises Over $543K For Healthier Hearts

Health, Philanthropy | December 17, 2024

On Saturday, November 23, Florida International University transformed into a hub of energy, purpose, and community spirit as over 1,500 participants gathered for the 2024 Miami-Dade Heart Walk, hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA). Together, walkers, sponsors, and volunteers raised more than $543,000 to advance CPR education, support critical research, and improve heart health across South Florida.

This year’s event, co-chaired by Alex Almazan (Almazan Law), Frank Fernandez (Blueprints 4 Safety), and Jose Romano (Zoo Miami Foundation), brought together an inspiring mix of individuals, local businesses and teams united by a shared mission: to make heart disease and stroke history.

A Celebration of Community and Heart Health

The day kicked off with enthusiasm, starting with a lively group warmup led by an HCA Florida Healthcare physician. Attendees were treated to a beautiful rendition of the national anthem, sung by volunteer Grace Chaffins, before taking to the course in solidarity. Local media personalities Jenise Fernandez (Local 10) and Tavares Jones (WSVN) hosted the event, keeping spirits high as participants walked for loved ones, heart health awareness, and their own wellness journeys.

Throughout the event, walkers engaged in interactive health stations—checking blood pressure, learning hands-only CPR, and discovering small, impactful ways to prioritize cardiovascular health.

Marisol Vera, executive director for the American Heart Association Greater Miami and Fort Lauderdale, highlighted the power of collective action:
“Seeing so many people come together for a single cause is truly inspiring. The Heart Walk is about more than fundraising—it’s about creating healthier communities, empowering individuals, and advancing life-saving efforts that impact us all.”

Community Champions and Sponsors Make It Possible

This year’s event was made possible by the support of over 40 companies, 137 teams, and a roster of committed sponsors, including:
SCHILLER Americas, American AED, Baptist Heart & Vascular Care, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, UHealth – University of Miami Health System, ADP, Amgen, Boston Scientific, Florida Power & Light Company, HCA Florida Healthcare, LaCroix Sparkling Water, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Ryder System, and Victoria Nursing & Rehabilitation.

“Every participant, donor, and sponsor has made a measurable difference in fighting heart disease and stroke,” shared co-chair Frank Fernandez. “The Heart Walk isn’t just about steps—it’s about progress toward a healthier, stronger future for our community.”

Why the Miami-Dade Heart Walk Matters

Heart disease remains the number one cause of death globally, and events like the Heart Walk play a vital role in funding research, educational outreach, and life-saving programs. The funds raised this year will expand local CPR training, improve access to healthcare resources, and support scientific advancements that save lives.

“Every dollar counts, and every step taken today leads to better outcomes tomorrow,” said Alex Almazan, co-chair. “We’re proud to see the Miami-Dade community join forces to support the American Heart Association’s mission.”

How to Continue Supporting Heart Health

While the 2024 Miami-Dade Heart Walk was a resounding success, the fight for heart health continues. Donations are still being accepted at MiamiDadeHeartWalk.org, where individuals can learn more about the AHA’s life-saving initiatives.
