Louis Vuitton Revives A Classic We Didn’t Know We Needed: The Bed Trunk
Louis Vuitton’s iconic Bed Trunk is back like you’ve never seen it with brand new designs by Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director of the Women’s Collections, and Pharrell Williams, the Men’s Creative Director. Created for the sophisticated traveler who loves design, these trunks express the Maison’s dedication to innovation while honoring their signature traditions and savoir-faire. Louis Vuitton originally invented the coveted Bed Trunk in 1868, designed for explorers to take with them worldwide. Since its creation, the trunk has gained major notoriety and is a beloved piece of luxury collection everywhere.
This past April, Louis Vuitton announced the re-release of its iconic Bed Trunk featuring the classic monogram canvas on the outside and, on the inside, a sophisticated folding bed frame of aluminum and beechwood. The Bed Trunk quickly and easily opens into a stable bed base. This frame holds a four-part mattress that adapts to and supports each owner with maximum comfort. These sections are covered with a memory foam mattress topper and lie across woven cotton straps, a feature used since the earliest Louis Vuitton trunks to secure clients’ personal effects as they travel.
Now, two fresh, contemporary iterations versions of the Bed Trunk have been unveiled by the Maison’s artistic directors – Ghesquière and Williams. Ghesquière’s novel interpretation of the historic Bed Trunk launches us on a futuristic journey with signature aesthetics from his earlier collections, which have been incorporated into the design to create a one-of-a-kind model. Inspired by the brand’s Cruise 2024 collection, the exterior features engraved metal plates that reflect a dystopian spatial realm, while the interior harbors a romantic touch with a floral printed mattress that matches back to a jacket from their Spring Summer 2018 collection.
Williams’ trunk gives the design an original twist by combining distressed striped patterns on the outside, echoing the legendary 1872 canvas, with red and white stripes on the inside. The jacquard mattress and pillow feature “LV Lovers” embroidery, while touches of blond wood contrast dramatically with the black aluminum hardware. Pharrell has created a unique and remarkable collector’s piece by combining historic elegance with contemporary flair.
