Iris Apfel has added holiday tree designer to her colorful repertoire. The ageless style icon and seasonal Palm Beach resident is the celebrity designer of this year’s Holiday Tree at The Royal Poinciana Plaza, one of The Island’s trendiest upscale shopping destinations and home to beloved luxury retailers.
All eyes, bespectacled and otherwise, were on the Iris Apfel tree when it debuted this month. In addition to the decorative surfboards which are a perpetual feature, this year’s rendition dons oversized, round black eyeglasses and multiple strands of large turquoise beads — two of Apfel’s signature accessories.

Known and loved for her incredibly chic, eclectic style and sharp wit, the 101-year-old is a living legend in the world of fashion and design. Iris Apfel is an entrepreneur recognized for the successful textile business, Old World Weavers, which she started in 1950 with her late husband Carl. She skyrocketed to fame in 2005 when she was the subject of an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Apfel is also an author, model, and eyewear designer, and has even had a Mattel “Barbie” doll fashioned in her likeness.
“When approached this year to work with The Royal on the installation, I was flattered. What we’ve pulled together emulates my outlook on life—it’s playful, colorful, optimistic, and completely unique,” says Apfel, adding: “I hope everyone who views it, smiles and is inspired to walk to the beat of their own drum.”
