THE TASTE

Head to Paramount’s back lot for a ‘taste’ of L.A., including some of the best food and drink from the best chefs in Tinseltown.Opening night (Sept. 1) is a soiree that features a focused collection of tastings, distinctive cocktail and wine offerings, and a chance to party on the backlot with The L.A. Times’ hosts and the weekend’s participating chefs and mixologists. Restaurants include Baran’s 2239, Bourbon Steak, Chinese Laundry, Crying Tiger, Fat Dragon, Friends & Family, Georgie, Hatchet Hall, Lao Tao, Little Fatty, Mainland Poke, Scratch Bar & Kitchen, Side Chick, Simone, Tabula Rasa Bar and Tar & Roses. Throughout the weekend, there will be additional demonstrations including “Field to Fork” with Sang Yoon, the chef and owner of Father’s Office and Lukshon; “Dinner with a Twist” hosted by the chef and owner of Scopa Italian Roots and L.A. Times food critic Jonathan Gold; and a Sunday block party co-hosted by Sherry Yard, former Spago pastry chef and tour de force behind the Tuck Room Tavern.

L.A. COUNTY FAIR

Your grandfather’s fair this is not. The L.A. County Fair, which kicks off Labor Day weekend and runs through September 24, has made big changes since its creation in 1921 as an agricultural fair. There are still elements of that (livestock beauty contests anyone), but there are also acrobats, wine tastings, exhibitions and concerts—including some o the biggest acts in country music (Justin Moore, Kellie Pickler and Jake Owen all had prime spots in 2016). As a bonus, this year, the Grammy Museum will present its Taylor Swift Experience, an ode and homage to all things Tay-Tay. Yee-haw?

“HARRY POTTER + THE SORCERER’S STONE” AT CINESPIA

There’s almost nothing more quintessentially L.A. (or more fun) than a Cinespia screening at the iconic Hollywood Forever cemetery. This year is a doozy—on Sept. 2, grab your cloak and wand with your Bertie Botts jellybeans and chocolate frogs tucked safely into your picnic basket and settle down to watch a modern-day classic in Harry Potter + the Sorcerer’s Stone. An evening this great will leave you—well—stupefied.
