When David Robert Jones (aka David Bowie) died last year, there were numerous stories about how much of a fixture he was in Soho, going about his daily life like any other resident of the area whether stopping by Dean and DeLuca or browsing for a tome at The Strand. He once said he couldn’t imagine living anywhere but New York—a city he called home more than two decades. For a rocker like Bowie, SoHo seemed a natural habitat, but once upon a time, he made Midtown his base, where he owned a spacious condo in the Essex House. The apartment (915) at 160 Central Park South is now for sale and was recently listed for $6.495M. Bowie lived here with his wife, the super model Iman from 1992-2002.

The property is a 1,877 square foot three-bedroom, 2.5 bath space with a 28-foot living room overlooking Central Park. Some touches from the couple remain – a paneled dressing room built for Iman, and some hidden shelves in the living room; the master bathroom had been converted to a panic room, just in case an intruder got inside the apartment. (It has since been converted back.) There’s also a walnut-paneled office (off the living room), a newly renovated pass-through kitchen with top appliances— Miele oven, convection oven, and dishwasher; a Liebherr cabinet-faced refrigerator, a Subzero refrigerator, Gaggenau cooktop, polished granite countertops and custom cabinetry. There are two master-sized bedrooms with custom-marble, porcelain and limestone en-suite baths. The master bedroom offers a separate dressing area and an extra large bath with deep soaking tub, rain shower and heated floors.

A piece of rock history will be included in the sale – David Bowie’s Yamaha piano, which has been handed down with the apartment through various owners. For more information go to Corcoran.com.
