LOUIS XIII Launches The Origin–1874 Limited Edition
Back in 1569, on a battlefield in Jarnac, near the town of Cognac, a French royal military officer dropped a metal flask. The events that occurred at this medieval battle launched the story of the iconic Cognac, LOUIS XIII.
Stamped with the French monarchy’s fleur-de-lys, the flask laid buried in the soil until a farmer unearthed it in the mid-1800s. In 1850, cellar master Paul-Emile Rémy Martin, owner of the Rémy Martin cognac house, fell for the intricate allure of the flask and purchased it.
The acquisition proved historic. Inspired by its striking shape and regal fleur-de-lys medallions, he decided to create a decanter in its image for a special cognac composed with only the very oldest and rarest eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne found in his cellars. Thus, began the history of LOUIS XIII which has since conquered time and is enjoyed around the world.
Today, some 142 years later, LOUIS XIII celebrates its iconic history with “The Origin – 1874.” This exclusive decanter inaugurates a special series of limited editions, the Time Collection, each dedicated to a storied milepost in the brand’s legacy.
With the rich scents of honey and honeysuckle, plum and myrrh, leather and wood bark and passion fruits, the amber liquids of “The Origin – 1874” – LOUIS XIII’s signature blend of up to 1,200 Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie – rest in a pure Saint-Louis crystal decanter, which resembles the ancient flask that began the decorated story of LOUIS XIII.
The distinctive decanter features the original number of 13 dentelle spikes, as opposed to the 10 spikes included today. “The Origin – 1874” also features unique neck and collar seals of champagne gold as well as a mouth-blown stopper in the shape of an upturned decanter, the same design that crested the antique flask. The exquisite decanter is nestled in a champagne-hued metal coffret, whose elegant woven texture is reminiscent of the wicker baskets that the original bottles of LOUIS XIII were delivered in.
Ludovic du Plessis, LOUIS XIII global executive director, says “’The Origin – 1874’ marks one of the landmark moments in the LOUIS XIII fascinating story, and it will become part of your own personal legacy and tale.”
