Karen Caldwell Designs shined when the movie Spotlight won Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Feb. 28. When Spotlight producers Blye Faust and Nicole Rocklin stepped on the stage to accept their gold statuette, they did so wearing the designs of the talented Karen Caldwell, our favorite local designer. For Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, the St. Helena-based Caldwell also helped dress actor Brian d’Arcy James, one of the stars in the Oscar-winning flick—the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.

We caught up with Caldwell to get her reaction. “Wow! It was the best night ever!” she gushed. “What a thrilling experience it’s been to get to know the amazing ladies behind an incredibly Oscar winning film! I knew they could do it! I loved meeting all the cast too as we sent them off and helped style them all to get their Golden statuettes! I will never forget this night!”

This wasn’t the first time Faust wore Karen Caldwell Designs. The producer donned a cinnamon brown one shoulder Karen Caldwell Design gown at the BAFTA Awards and a blue lace Karen Caldwell Design at the 2016 Oscar Nominee luncheon.

Caldwell, who oozes old Hollywood glamour herself, has a knack for putting together complete looks from head to toe. For Faust and Rocklin, she selected just the perfect vintage jewelry and other fun accessories for their memorable evening.

Also on the Oscar scene from our region were vintners Robin and Michelle Baggett from Alpha Omega winery in Rutherford. Michelle, a founding board member of the Napa Valley Film Festival, sparkled at The Weinstein Company’s lavish pre-Oscar party, presented in partnership with Chopard, DeLeon Tequila, FIJI Water, and Lexus, at the Beverly Hills Montage on Feb. 27. In addition to the Baggetts, the exclusive soiree drew Lady Gaga, Bryan Cranston, Diane Warren and Italian composer Ennio Morricone, all of whom were nominated for an Academy Award, Lady Gaga’s fiancé Taylor Kinney, Roger Federer,  Lana Del Rey, Zendaya, “Dancing With the Stars” choreographer Derek Hough, John Legend and Christy Teigen, Todd Haynes, “Carol” producers Christine Vachon and Elizabeth Karlsen, Nick Jonas and Andie MacDowell. The Baggetts attended as guests of their good friends, David and Michele Glasser, COO and President of The Weinstein Co. and AO ERA Elite Club members.

The magical, star-studded evening showcased Broadway performers of The Weinstein Company Broadway productions and many actors of The Weinstein Company films. Hough performed two numbers from the company’s upcoming “Singin’ in the Rain” musical, which will open on Broadway in January and Warren and Zendaya sang as well.

Select wines from the Jackson Family Wines catalogue were served at the event, which was also attended by Julia Jackson of Jackson Family Wines. Attendees were also gifted a bottle of 2014 Cardinale Intrada Sauvignon Blanc from Jackson Family Wines’ acclaimed winemaker Chris Carpenter, as well as a personal invite to visit the Cardinale winery in Napa Valley.
