MIA: Donald J Pliner Opens Coming Home Gallery in Wynwood
Donald J Pliner established a reputation designing some of the most pristine footwear and accessories. His art, which is inspired by over two decades of world travels, helped create a line that combined the exquisite taste of fashion, fit and comfort, into every design. This same artistic eye and keen ambitions which prompted him to be an iconic American shoe designer, are now taking him into new ventures with the opening of Coming Home Gallery, in the heart of Wynwood.
The new gallery located on 29 NW 24th St, transform the 25-foot ceilings and 7,000 square foot space into a world that is created exclusively by the imagination of Donald J Pliner and his wife, fellow designer Lisa Pliner. The Pliner’s have focused the gallery around a concept of five distinctive colors: black, white, silver, cobalt blue, and China red in what the duo calls “American modernism.” The distinct collection found in the Gallery consists of carefully selected home furnishings and showcases a collection of chandeliers, sofas, chairs, rugs, massive mirrors and one-of-a-kind art objects that will captivate even the most experienced and seasoned design enthusiast.
The Wynwood Arts District is home to over 70 Art Galleries including David Castillo Gallery and the Bakehouse Art Complex, making this district Miami’s central art-hub and one very well-known by the art aficionados. This district is known for hosting some of the largest open-air street installations in the world, art walks every second Saturday, and the celebrated arrival of the Art Basel fair since its inception in 2002.
The Pliner’s are excited about this venture, especially since it’ll give them a chance to expand their reputable support of charities and philanthropic art mission. The space will serve a dual purpose now that they can use it for their gallery and to host cultural programming events supporting their favorite causes and fellow artists.
But shoes, furnishings and humanitarian work are not the end of the line for the Pliners. The spirited duo is also carving themselves a presence in the publishing industry as they explore their literary skills. Lisa just recently published her book “Look Into Her Eyes,” which tells the story of Babydoll, the couple’s precious Maltese that has been part of the Donald J Pliner brand for years, and has appeared in marketing materials and several shoe styles; meanwhile, Donald is also in talks to write his first autobiography.
