If you are looking for a friendly, neighborhood bar a la Cheers then place your bets on The Libertine Bar in Lower Greenville even if you have to drive 40 minutes to get there.
It’s definitely a casual vibe. Walking in you do kind of expect Norm to wave at you from a bar stool as he orders another beer. It’s spacious and open with booths along the sides for those who want some privacy. Although it can get a little crowded once in awhile the seating is laid out so that you don’t feel like your personal space is being compromised.
The Food Is Not What You’d Expect
The food is best described as pub-food-meets-Michelin-star-and-has-a-baby. Dishes are seasonal and sourced from local producers. Most are made in house — they even grind their own beef for burgers using prime cuts. Sure, you can get a burger here but it will not be your run of the mill, greasy beef patty. Instead you’ll bite into a half pound burger with aged white cheddar, diced red onion, bacon mayo, and house made pickles served alongside a generous pile of hand cut fries or sweet potato fries. If that’s not your style then what about a tuna burger with kimchee saw, pickled ginger, and ponzu mayo?
Seitan can be substituted in many of the dishes to make them vegan or vegetarian. It’s just another way that the staff at The Libertine Bar go all out to make sure things are perfect for their guests. The kitchen is open until midnight so if you end up working late you won’t have to assuage your appetite with cocktail olives and peanuts.

Cocktails Are Artfully Crafted
However, most of us go to bars to have a few drinks with friends so no doubt you are wondering about the cocktails. They have nailed the classics like the Aviation, Sidecar, and Corpse Reviver but they’ve also got some signature cocktails that are worth trying. The Double Pecan Maple Leaf is a mixture of Knob Creek Bourbon, home made butter pecan reduction, maple, lemon, and chocolate bitters and we wish they would bottle it so we could enjoy it with Thanksgiving dinner — or breakfast. Mr. Kitty is another cocktail that is a must try if you like your drinks on the sweeter side. House-infused vanilla vodka is mixed with raspberry syrup, and cream so it’s somewhat like a creamy Italian Soda with a ninja-like kick. You just don’t expect it.
Go. Enjoy. Repeat often.
