Luxury Defined: Inside the Mandarin Oriental, New York
“Located on the 35th floor next to the lobby, our Lobby Lounge features panoramic views of Central Park and Columbus Circle. The space really comes alive at night when hotel guests and locals gather to meet friends for creative cocktails and some light bites,” explained Susanne Hatje, General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental, New York. In an interview, we discussed the style and suites of the hotel, the perfect itinerary for new guests, and much more.
Tell me a little bit about the Mandarin NYC. How would you describe the atmosphere, decor and ambiance of the hotel?
Mandarin Oriental, New York offers guests an unbeatable setting in Columbus Circle overlooking Central Park, the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline which is then complemented by the legendary service that Mandarin Oriental is known for. The property’s style reflects the brand’s Oriental heritage, which can be seen in the use of works of art and small details, adding to the overall luxurious feel of the hotel. More contemporary elements are also reflected in the design, which is a nod of our New York City location.
One of the signature accommodations of the Mandarin are its specialty-themed suites. What makes these suites some of the most unique and luxurious in the city?
Our 46 elegantly-appointed suites at Mandarin Oriental, New York offer guests a distinct setting and stylish contemporary design. Each suite is located at the corners of the building to offer stunning floor-to-ceiling views of the Manhattan skyline, Central Park and the Hudson River.
The generously-sized suites range from 800 to 3,300 square feet and have been designed in a way that we are able to tailor the layout to the needs of individual guests or families. Our four one-of-a-kind signature suites were designed with unique touches to ensure that no two experiences are the same. This broad offering of suites gives the property the flexibility to cater to unique requests and customize each experience.
What sets the Mandarin NYC apart from other top-tier luxury hotels in the city?
Mandarin Oriental, New York offers both business and leisure travelers an unparalleled location just steps away from Central Park, premier shopping on Fifth Avenue, the midtown business area, Times Square and the Broadway Theater District. Our 244 spacious guestrooms and suites all feature floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto Central Park, the Hudson River or the city skyline. Additionally, the property is proud to have one of New York’s only Five-Star spas offering an array of rejuvenating treatments as well as a vibrant signature restaurant, Asiate, featuring contemporary cuisine and an outstanding wine selection. Completed with the personalized service that Mandarin Oriental is known for, the property offers an experience unlike any other in Manhattan.
How would you describe the nightlife scene at the hotel, particularly the lobby lounge?
For guests looking to enjoy a bit of nightlife during their stay, our Lobby Lounge or MObar are fantastic spots to enjoy the after dinner buzz within our lobby and overlooking the city. Located on the 35th Floor next to the lobby, our Lobby Lounge features panoramic views of Central Park and Columbus Circle. The space really comes alive at night when hotel guests and locals gather to meet friends for creative cocktails and some light bites.
On the other hand, MObar is discreetly tucked away on the 35th Floor and is one of New York’s best-kept secrets, especially given the hotel’s interesting array of high profile guests. The intimate space was designed by Tony Chi and inspired by New York apartments from the 1930s and 1940s and also offers a wide selection of fine wines in addition to signature cocktail infusions.
Finally, for first-time visitors, what are the top 5 things they should experience on-site to get the full experience of the property?
After settling into their guestroom, I would first recommend that guests enjoy a bit of “sight-seeing” during our Lobby Lounge’s Afternoon Tea overlooking the city and offering an “east meets west” experience along with our famous ginger scones. Next, I might suggest relaxing with a rejuvenating treatment, such as our new Jade Stone Facial or a signature Oriental Essence Massage, in our spa which is truly an oasis of calm high above the city. Then make it an evening of indulgence with our decadent seven-course Tasting Menu with wine pairings at Restaurant Asiate featuring spectacular views of the city skyline followed by a nightcap with our Gratification signature cocktail in the comforts of MObar. After you’ve woken up to the sun rising over Central Park, watch the light begins to change during the afternoon while enjoying a swim in our 75-foot lap pool overlooking the Hudson River while a cruise liner passes by in the distance.
