Public Art Shines with Abu Dhabi Art’s Beyond Section
At this year’s edition of Abu Dhabi Art, Public Art in the event’s Beyond section was given special prominence through large-scale installations.
Art was placed within the Manarat Al Saadiyat and throughout the city this year, highlights works by artists including Ai Weiwei, Bita Fayyazi, Choi Jeong Hwa, Feryel Lakhdar, François Morellet, Hanaa Malallah, Ilya Kabakov, Mohammed Kazem, Sahand Hesamiyan, Sherin Guirguis, Shilpa Gupta, Subodh Gupta, and Virginie Yassef.
Together these works formed a series of autonomous artworks in dialogue with each other culminating in a presentation that revealed the dynamic and powerful nature of public art. Moreover, the artwork engaged with the city of Abu Dhabi, a city that is currently in the midst of trying to balance its heritage with contemporary ambitions.
Abu Dhabi Art is expanding the Beyond initiative through anew annual selection of large-scale art installations. This new Beyond initiative will be on display in public areas throughout the city for 6 months; stretching as a canvas within the urban landscape.
