ABC7’s Carolyn Tyler Shares Her Weekend Routine

It’s been a busy month for popular ABC7 anchor/reporter Carolyn Tyler. She helped put on a successful Oct. 3 benefit for Friends of Faith, which helps low income and underinsured Bay Area residents undergoing treatment for breast cancer and was started after her former colleague, the late Faith Fancher, was diagnosed with the disease. Tyler also masterfully emceed the Museum of the African Diaspora’s 9th annual gala on Oct. 11. We caught up with her in between events to ask her about her weekend routine—the one she follows when she doesn’t have a function on her calendar. Unlike most of us, her weekends are on Fridays and Saturday since she anchors the ABC7 Sunday Morning News at 5 a.m., 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Read on to find out how Tyler spends her off days.
Friday:
I wake up at 8 a.m. I deserve to sleep in because I’ve had an exhausting week chasing Mayor Ed Lee and other San Francisco movers and shakers. City Hall is my beat for ABC/7. My guy, Gary, has left a pot of coffee brewing on his way out the door. I spend the next hour or so drinking java and perusing the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times. Not online! I’m old school. I like the feel of the paper. I also check my social media accounts, especially Facebook.
At 10 a.m. I head to the gym. I belong to the Jewish Community Center and like to do cardio and then some exercises in the warm water pool.
For lunch I’m usually at Cafe Des Amis on Union Street—I love the chicken paillard salad—or Charles Phan’s restaurant, Out the Door.

Afterward, I like to go shopping. I’ve lived within walking distance of Fillmore Street for years and have seen the street transform many times. Now it’s a destination especially for women’s fashions and accessories. I’m an Alexis Bittar junkie and can’t have too many bangles and baubles. I also venture to Union Square for essentials. My favorite recent purchase is a pair of Chanel ballet flats from Neiman’s.

Around 4 p.m, I hang out with the love of my life, my 10-year-old nephew, Solomon. I don’t have children so all that “baby love” is lavished on him.
Usually at 7 p.m. I have dinner with Gary. If we aren’t going to an event, we like to eat in the neighborhood. We like a Cheers’ spot where everyone knows your name. We like Florio where we split the steak and pomme frites. We also enjoy 1300 on Fillmore where Chef David Lawrence and his wife Monetta White are friends. I’m honored to have my picture on the wall at John’s Grill and owner John Konstin is a big supporter of my non-profit Friends of Faith, so that restaurant holds a special place in my heart.

At 11 p.m. it’s lights out on an ordinary night. I looove to sleep!
Saturday:
I have an 8:30 a.m. standing hairdresser appointment at Bjeanee Therapeutics.

At 1p.m., I grab a bite with girlfriends or go to a movie with Gary. We love the Kabuki! It’s in our ‘hood and the most luxurious place to catch a flick.

I have an early dinner around 5 p.m. Gary is a great cook, but if he wants a break, we go to Via Veneto. It’s a cozy Fillmore Street restaurant where many of the customers know each other and owner Massimo entertains.
By 8 p.m., it’s bedtime. It seems that 2:30 a.m. comes very early. That’s when I have to rise and shine to begin my work week.
See you on the telly Sunday morning at 5 o’clock!
