Mercat a la Planxa (638 South Michigan), the modern tapas restaurant inspired by Spain’s Catalan region, will celebrate National Paella Day on Thursday, March 27 by offering guests their signature paella dishes for just half the price. Mercat’s signature paella dishes include: Paella Negra with black calaspara rice, lobster, scallops, clams, mussels, artichoke tomato salad and saffron aioli toast ($37.50; original price $75); Paella Valencia with saffron calaspara rice, chicken ropa, chorizo, artichoke tomato salad and saffron aioli toast ($21; original price $42); and Fideua de Camaron with angel hair pasta, jumbo prawns, squid, cherry tomato parsley salad and piquillo aiolo toast ($27.50; original price $55).

Chef Cory Morris strongly recommends guests make a reservation, as they must allow 45 minutes for the paella to be prepared. You can make reservations by calling 312-765-0524.

Mercat a la Planxa’s National Paella Day celebration comes in advance of the restaurant’s First Annual Paella Cook-Off, hosted by Executive Chef Jose Garces with Chicago Gourmet on Monday, June 23. Chef Graces, along with a panel of judges, will taste paella dishes from Chicago’s top chefs to vote on the winner. Additional details, including the chef line-up and ticket sales, will be announced.
