Pitbull – or “Mr. 305” as he’s sometimes known, has helped complete a new charter school set to open next month in Little Havana called Sports Leadership And Management (SLAM). The school has a relationship with the Miami Marlins and is designed to help kids get into careers like sports management. Yesterday he was in Washington D.C. speaking at the  2013 National Charter Schools Conference in favor of the controversial schools that are privately run public schools.

“I constantly gave a wrong address to go to a better school,” he told WUSA, a D.C. television station. “I don’t want anyone in America to have to lie about where they live.”

Still, performing shows all over the world and at the Grammys didn’t prepare the star for his foray into advocacy. “Speaking to you all actually makes me nervous, imagínate (imagine),” he said. But, “every day I see firsthand how my children are becoming highly motivated, thanks to the charter schools they attend.” The pop star has three of his six children enrolled in charter schools giving him plenty of exposure to the unique schools.
