The new Disney film, ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ featuring James Franco and Mila Kunis brought in $80 million in opening box office sales after being screened across 2,912 theaters. In addition, ‘Oz’ is the third best March film opening ever, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film stars James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis and made $24.1 million on Friday with projections for a weekend total around $70 million, according to The Huffington Post. In terms of March films, ‘Oz’ placed third behind ‘The Hunger Games’ ($152.5 million opening) and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ ($116.1 million opening).

‘Oz’ brought in more over the weekend than numerous high-profile films, including Bryan Singer’s ‘Jack the Giant Slayer,’ ‘Identity Theft’ starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, ‘Dead Man Down’ starring Colin Farrell and Terrance Howard, and ‘Snitch’ starring Dwayne Johnson.

According to IMDB, ‘Oz’ is about a small-time magician who finds himself forced to decide whether he will be a good man or a great one. Based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz novels, this film is a prequel to the 1939 MGM film, ‘The Wizard of Oz.’

On March 8, the film was released in conventional 2D, as well as the Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D.
