Following in the footsteps of the City of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, city officials in Malibu are working with a New York-based licensing firm to create a new “fashion logo” for the city that could appear on clothing, accessories and other products and turn a profit for Malibu.
Known for its beautiful beaches and chic residents, Malibu officials are working with licensing company Excel Corp. to create a logo that will function as a “kind of official Malibu seal of approval,” according to LA Racked. Malibu-endorsed apparel will reportedly be available for purchase by 2014 and between 5-15% of sales will go toward maintaining local beaches and parks.
Malibu Surfside News reports that Reva Feldman, assistant city manager, said in a report, “It is anticipated that the fee of $90,000 will be recouped with this program and the general fund will be reimbursed for the full amount. … The city of Malibu is an internationally recognized community. There are many opportunities for the city to develop a licensing program with an official City of Malibu logo. Currently, the city does not have a trademark for the licensing rights to the name ‘City of Malibu’ or to any specific logo.”
The proposed logo will not replace the existing city seal, which is used for all official city documents and official city business matters.
