Violinist Joshua Bell Hosted Celebrity-Studded Charity Concert at His NYC Triplex

News | January 18, 2013

Grammy-nominated violinist Joshua Bell opened up his Manhattan triplex apartment on Tuesday night to perform a concert benefiting Education Through Music, a non-profit that fosters music education in under-funded schools.

“I built it from scratch with the idea that I would have concerts in this space,” Bell told W Magazine. “I love classical music being appreciated this way because a lot of it was written to be played in the home.”

And New York’s A-list agrees! Several high-profile New York celebrities including Uma Thurman, Harvey Weinstein and Gerard Butler offered their support to the cause by serving as the event’s host committee. Other attendees such as Mary-Louise Parker, Carol Alt, Gayle King, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger were spotting walking around Bell’s sleek and industrial style apartment drinking champagne and nibbling caviar.

After Bell performed a Tchaikovsky melody and Gershwin piece in the library of his home, he couldn’t help remarking on the star-studded crowd. “Julianna [Margulies] came straight from shooting. She was just in court. And Miss Universe is here. She came from Mars,” he said. “Glenn [Close] and Meryl [Streep] are sorry, they have the flu.”
